What equipment is needed for orchestra?
Items needed to participate in the Orchestra Class:
* INSTRUMENT; the School District does not have any instruments to rent.
* BOOK - ‘Essential Elements for Strings 2000’ with CD and DVD - cost is around $10.00
**5th grade only**
It may be requested that students purchase a book or solo as we go along, but nothing specific is required past 5th grade..
* Lint-free Rag to wipe rosin and finger prints off of the instrument. One can be purchased from Mrs. Hershey for 50 cents.
* PENCIL in the case or folder at all times
* Sponge or shoulder rest - violin and viola - a sponge can be a good first option, but you will
soon want a shoulder rest. Shoulder rests can be purchased from Ward-brodt or sharmusic.com
Mrs. Hershey recommends the Kun or Everest shoulder rest. They each have their own fit and it is best
to try them out prior to purchase. You can also purchase through sharmusic.com or swstrings.com Each
company has a good reputation with working with string students and their families.
* Rock stop - cello - to keep the cello endpin from slipping on a wood or tile floor
There are many types of rock stops. Ask what might work best. At school we use the chair strap, or a
round rock stop.
* Folding Music Stand for practicing at home
* Extra set of Strings (optional)
IMMS and MHS students should have an extra set just in case.
Students who own their own instrument should change their strings every year for best sound quality.
INSTRUMENT RENTAL: If you do not have a Violin, Viola or Cello, you can rent one from the following Music Stores in the Madison area. There are other places to rent or buy also.
Students should check their instrument size at least once a year with their teacher.
