Shoulder rests:
A shoulder rest is an important piece of equipment for the orchestra classroom. All violinists and violists should have some sort of shoulder rest. The shoulder rest helps to hold the instrument with the shoulder and the jaw without straining.
High School students - should have a Kun or Everest shoulder rest or other rest fit to them
Middle School students -
7th/8th grade - should have a Kun or Everest shoulder rest
6th grade - full size instrument players should have a kun or Everest. Students with 3/4
instruments should talk to Mrs. Hershey about a shoulder rest.
5th grade - should have at least a sponge. I suggest a firm sponge that is meant for string players. Some students will be better off with a Kun or Everest shoulder rest due to their height or neck length. Mrs. Hershey will advise these students towards a shoulder rest.
Shoulder rest bag:
A shoulder rest bag will assist students who do not have a specific place in their case for the shoulder rest or sponge. The bag attaches to the violin/viola case with a hook. This allows the student to not loose the shoulder rest, keeps it protected, and helps the student remember to bring it to class. ;)
Ask Mrs. Hershey if she has any shoulder rest bags.
